Established in April 1950, the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China upholds the mission of “leading domestically, excelling internationally, and building a world-class institution”. The school foregrounds the values of “Respecting individuality and exploring students’ potential. Everything for the development of students, the rise of our nation, and the progress of mankind.” They commit to cultivating students for “comprehensive development, outstanding specialties, innovative spirits, and high morals.” Keep reading to learn how the school integrated ClassIn to effectively deliver and diversify its teaching modalities.

A quick and smooth transition to virtual learning in times of uncertainty

During the pandemic in 2020, the middle school section of all branches fully transitioned to online instruction using ClassIn. By the end of May 2020, more than 3,000 students and teachers had conducted a total of more than 16,000 classes, which constituted almost 280,000 hours of online learning.

By the end of May 2020, more than 3,000 students and teachers had conducted a total of more than 16,000 classes, which constituted almost 280,000 hours of online learning.

During the pandemic, the school transitioned their entire curriculums of all grades to be delivered online using ClassIn. A regular school day is scheduled to have eight classes from 8 AM to 6 PM. With ClassIn affordances, teachers of different subjects were able to directly realize usual class activities in an online environment. Functions such as interactive blackboard, breakout rooms, screen sharing, unlimited cloud storage, freeform collaborative writing, polling, name drawing, and more enabled a smooth transition to remote learning. Moreover, foreign teachers who were temporarily stranded overseas could conduct classes routinely as well.

The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China also expanded its teaching modalities with the support of EdTech, advancing more equitable distribution of educational resources. For instance, a distinguished teacher can teach a live-streamed class to thousands of kids nationwide. Additionally, schools of different districts can have a collaborative class together, participating in the same activities and discussions simultaneously. Outside of the classroom, ClassIn made sure school functions, such as parent-teacher conferences, take place as scheduled.

Long-term adoption of ClassIn-based OMO learning

As school operations returned to normal, the school decided to incorporate ClassIn into its everyday teaching and learning by upgrading 39 classrooms with ClassIn technologies for Online-Merge-Offline (OMO) education. So far, 7,439 students and teachers have had 53,305 lessons in OMO classrooms.

In addition, the school also collaborated with ClassIn to build the “future learning space”, covering 1,500 square meters. The space includes big data demonstration centers, multifunction conference rooms, interaction classrooms, STEAM innovation spaces, and more.

Now that students are back in the physical classroom, the school continues to employ ClassIn in its everyday instruction for more efficient delivery of class content and a more engaged class atmosphere. The school has also made it a regular proceeding to hold collaborative cross-district lessons on a weekly basis.

Assessment and presentation of learning effectiveness

ClassIn’s functions, including homework, exams, and learning reports, equipped teachers with versatile tools to evaluate student performance. Besides continuing to conduct standardized tests, teachers can also rely on online assignments and attendance statistics to assess students more comprehensively.

The annual calendar of virtual learning at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China didn’t vary much from that of in-person education. As soon as they adopted ClassIn, the school was able to move its traditional curriculum fully online with minimal adjustments.

The Second Haidian District K12 STEM Education Conference that took place at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China was a great testament to the quality of its virtual course program using ClassIn. The school held an exemplary space science class, connecting three groups of students in different locations. The three groups – thermal control group, attitude and orbit control group, and robotic arm group – worked collaboratively via ClassIn to effectively solve problems in class.
